Your Hundred Year Legacy!

By Dan Hadaway | Sunday, January 31, 2010 - Leave a Comment

In a hundred years . . . .

you might not be here, but your e-mail may!

Sending an e-mail is like sending a postcard through the US Postal Service. Anyone can read a postcard! Likewise, anyone can read an e-mail. You have no control over who eventually reads an e-mail that you send.

And worse: e-mails can hang around forever.  They are often copied onto backup media, or forwarded to people you didn’t expect to read them, or intercepted by malicious persons.

With that in mind, here are a few security issues to consider when sending an e-mail:

  • Expect zero privacy with your e-mail, even within the workplace.
  • Don’t send private or confidential information via e-mail.
  • Don’t send competitive information via e-mail.
  • Never send passwords through e-mail.

Don’t assume that your e-mail won’t be intercepted….it CAN happen to you!  The best way to approach e-mail is to live by this rule-of-thumb:

If it’s a secret, or has a negative statement in it, don’t e-mail it.

Intended Use:

The purpose of Vigilize is to respond to ISO’s complaints that users never read ISO’s “ongoing security awareness training reminders.”  Our tweets are designed to be copied into the subject line of your awareness reminder, with the language on these pages put into the body.  The goal is that the user will have to read the subject line to know to delete the message, and if they understand the subject line the reminder is communicated.  If not, they will go into the message and read the reminder.

Feel free to use Vigilize in your own Security Awareness Program.  Let us know if you have any ideas, suggested tweets, or ways to improve this FREE service.
